O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials before making the move in Los Angeles in 1986. Her career started as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included shows for television, independent movies, and many other shows. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. O'Grady was the large-haired secretariat from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series Ensemble for 1995.
