O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials before making the move in Los Angeles in 1986.
